San Francisco Center for the Book (SFCB), Miniature Watercolor Sketchbook with Magnetic Closure, 10 September 2016

Create a beautiful and compact (under 3 inches!) sketchbook with 140lb weight watercolor paper. Each students’ book will have an exposed-sewn French linkstitch binding and a protective flap for the fore edge. The instructor will demonstrate how to hide a magnet inside the front cover board and a metal band inside the flap for a subtle and flawless closure. Students will get to customize their handmade sketchbooks by painting and decorating the covers, flap, and spine, leaving class with a ready-to-use book that is all their own.

San Francisco Center for the Book (SFCB), The Deconstructed/Reconstructed Book, 18 December 2017

Using drawings made in class, students will create an artists’ book by deconstructing these drawings. Spark your creativity by playing with imagery and learning to use water media to create artwork on large sheets of paper. Through a series of folding and cutting, this work will be transformed into signatures. The instructor will assist each student in creating an interesting visual narrative. Paper grain and paper handling will be discussed in the deconstructing process and the drawings will be reconstructed anew as they are sewn together with a “doubleneedle” Coptic stitch. Hard covers will be glued into the front and back. Students will leave with a beautiful, magical, and cohesive artist's book.
